Vietnam will lead ASEAN


Thailand to hand over ASEAN Chairmanship to Viet Nam on 4 November

The 35th ASEAN Summit will be held in Bangkok from 2 to 4 November and will be attended by more than 20 countries. It will be the occasion for a solemn handover ceremony. Officially, Viet Nam will lead the organization on 1 January 2020.

ASEAN is a political organization of 10 South-East Asian countries. According to the Bangkok Declaration, the goals of the organization are to bring peace to the region and accelerate social, economic and cultural development of member countries. The chairmanship of the Association is transferred from one state to another in alphabetical order each year.

The chairmanship of the organization will enable Viet Nam to set the agenda. It will increase the role of the republic in solving urgent issues of the region.

In addition, from January 1, Vietnam will join the UN Security Council.
